It’s election season, and everyone is talking about making changes. How about changing teen driving laws? While no state has laws that are strong enough to protect our youngest, most vulnerable drivers, Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws can help.

To advocate for better teen driving laws, visit the National Safety Council’s legislative action center. But remember, you don’t need to wait for for your state. Parents can always set stronger household rules that make up for gaps in state laws. It helps to write them down, and you can make sure your teen—and you— stick to them by signing an agreement. We offer a version called the New Driver Deal. Feel free to modify it to fit your family’s needs, or use it as a guide to create your own agreement.
