Technology is a part of daily life—for our kids and us. It has certainly made its way into our cars, too. Some of this technology can be distracting and dangerous. Some of it can help us while we driving and potentially save lives.
One of the most common questions asked of DriveitHOME and the National Safety Council is “What app or device gives me the best overview of what’s going on when my teen is driving, even if I’m not in the car?”
It’s a valid question, so we wanted to add a page for parents to get a general overview of what options are available. However, there are a few points to keep in mind.
Technology can help, but your involvement is key
As with safety technology, monitoring technology is a tool to assist, not replace, your involvement. Spending at least 30 minutes every week as a passenger, practicing with your teen driver for the first year is still the best thing a parent can do to reduce their child’s crash risk. The monitoring technology should be way to open conversations, which leads us to our next point:
Transparency is best
One of the larger issues around this technology is the level of trust between parent and teen. Some parents worry about “spying” on their kids. As always, you need to make the best choices for your family, but we encourage parents to be open about using monitoring technology and talk with your teen about it. Using “gotcha” tactics probably isn’t going to start any conversations. If you find out your teen has been speeding, use the technology to talk about it and correct the problem.
Finally, DriveitHOME and the National Safety Council do not endorse any specific app, hardware or auto manufacturer. There are many solutions out there that are constantly being updated and joined by new products, making it hard to maintain a comprehensive list. We’re going to provide you with the three main types of monitoring technology and what to look for so you can make an informed decision on the system that works best for your family.
